The Case for Design Codes – an Office for Place webinar
Join the Office for Place webinar on Wednesday 17 July where the speakers will make the case for design codes and talk about the benefits they can have in developing more homes and quality neighbourhoods.
The Levelling Up and Regeneration Act introduced the requirement for local planning authorities to produce a design code for their area. A design code is a set of requirements for the development of a site or an area, with rules that are clear, specific, and unambiguous, and with extensive graphics.
For local authorities, the benefits include better quality design, and greater buy-in from local communities for new development. For applicants, a design code offers greater certainty of design expectations, and quicker planning decisions. Together, these benefits should lead to the creation of more and better-quality homes.
As part of our work to support their implementation, we have organised this online event to help local planning authorities, developers, and anyone with an interest in the subject, better understand the benefits a design code can offer their local area.
Attendees will hear from two of our recent Design Code Pathfinder cohort on why they have decided to produce codes, from two developers on why they find codes beneficial, and from two researchers on how codes have been used in other countries to deliver benefits.
We will also be launching some new products alongside this session and sharing details of an autumn series of events, which will focus on the theme of getting started with your design code.
You will hear from the following speakers at this event:
- Suzanne Kochanowski (Chief Executive, Office for Place)
- Conor Keappock (Design and Conservation Lead, London Borough of Waltham Forest – Design Code Pathfinder)
- Richard Shaw (Principal Design Officer, South Kesteven District Council – Design Code Pathfinder)
