The Launch of the Official Nigeria Energy Calculator 2050
The Nigeria Energy calculator was launched in Abuja on Wednesday 28 October 2015.
Sir David King, the UK Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change, was at the Launch in Abuja.
The Nigeria Energy calculator was officially launched yesterday, Wednesday 28 October 2015 in Abuja.
The calculator is a web tool which forecasts energy supply, energy demand and carbon dioxide emissions in Nigeria for the next 35 years, based on a range of user-variable inputs. The results it produces can be used as evidence in developing new energy and climate change policies.
At the launch Sir David King, the UK Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Climate Change, said, “I am delighted to be in Abuja today to launch the Nigeria Energy Calculator and promote the forthcoming UN Conference on Climate Change. The UK is ready to work with Nigeria and others to help ensure that when world leaders meet in Paris a strong and legally binding agreement is achieved. I am also looking forward to seeing the progress Nigeria has made in delivering greener power and moving away from generator dependence.”
The UN Conference will be a crucial milestone in addressing rising global temperatures. Countries including Nigeria and the UK will meet to agree a strong and legally binding agreement on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, applicable to all countries, with the overall aim of keeping global warming below 2°C. The risks posed by climate change are very real: in recent years Nigeria has seen desertification and increasing food insecurity in the North, rising levels of seasonal flooding, changes in rainfall, and coastal erosion in the South.
The Nigeria Energy Calculator is an invaluable tool for generating evidence to support intelligent policy making around energy and climate change issues, and the project is a great example of how the UK continues to lend support and expertise to help Nigeria address the challenge of climate change.
