The Queen's Baton Relay arrives Cameroon

The Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games has arrived Cameroon today all the way from Nigeria. The six man delegation was received at the Douala International Airport by the representative of the Governor of the Littoral Region, a representative of the British High Commission Yaounde, the Cameroon National Olympic Committee and the ministry of Sports and Physical Education.

The event is expected at its climax at the Yaounde City Council on Thursday January 9 where the baton will be handed to Prime Minister Philemon Yang on behalf of the Head of State who will also read the Queen’s message. Prior to this, the Baton will parade key areas in Yaounde in a mini-marathon that will begin from the Reunification Monument to the Yaounde City Council. The mini-marathon will involve former Commonwealth athletes, Commonwealth and other diplomatic missions, the ministry of sports and physical education, staff of the British High Commission and the Cameroon National Olympic Committee.

The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay is the curtain-raiser to the XX Commonwealth Games. Over a period of 288 days the baton will visit 70 nations and territories, cover 190,000 kilometers and involve a third of the world’s population, making it the world’s most engaging relay. The XX Commonwealth Games will hold in Glasgow in July 2014.
