The United Kingdom is assisting the Mauritian Ministry of Environment to set up a Carbon Calculator in Mauritius. The agreement for the grant worth £20,000 was signed on Wednesday 26 August by High Commissioner Jonathan Drew and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Premhans Jhugroo, in the presence of the Minister of Environment, Hon Devanand Virahsawmy. This project will allow Mauritian authorities to quantify greenhouse gas emissions, and model multiple scenarios in relation to its mitigation actions. The UK Pathways 2050 Calculator will be used as a model.

On signing the agreement, High Commisisoner Jonathan Drew said:

“Climate change is one of the most serious threats we face. The UK is taking a leading role in encouraging international action, including pushing for an ambitious EU energy and climate package that will lead to at least a 40% domestic reduction in EU greenhouse emissions by 2030 on 1990 levels. We are keen to work and share expertise with countries like Mauritius to create the right conditions for us to take action.”
