Three Trustees Appointed to the British Museum
The Prime Minister has appointed three new trustees to the board of the British Museum. Dame Vivian Hunt and George Weston have been appointed for four years from 25 March 2019, Philipp Hildebrand has been appointed for four years from 1 August 2019.
Dame Vivian Hunt
Vivian is the Managing Partner for McKinsey & Company’s United Kingdom and Ireland offices. Vivian previously led the firm’s Pharmaceuticals & Medical Products Practice in EMEA and continues to advise leading companies on a broad range of strategy topics, with a particular focus on performance transformation and organizational development. She also provides strategic advice to leading British firms in the private, public, and third sectors. Vivian serves on the firm’s global board of directors, its Values Committee, and several personnel committees. Vivian is also on the board of several important business groups, including the CBI London Council, the Mayor of London’s Business Advisory Board and Chairs BritishAmerican Business. She is also a member of the Trilateral Commission, the UK government-backed Industrial Strategy Council, Chair of HRH Prince of Wales’ Business in the Community’s “Seeing is Believing” programme, and a reader for the Queen’s Anniversary Prize.
Vivian sits on the Board of Southbank Centre, the Teach First’s Business Leaders’ Council, and is on the board of the US–UK Fulbright Commission. Vivian frequently speaks on McKinsey’s flagship research, and was co-author for Solving the United Kingdom’s productivity puzzle in a digital age, Why Diversity Matters, Delivering through Diversity, and The Power of Parity: Advancing women’s equality in the United Kingdom.
Vivian is an alumna of Harvard College and received her MBA from Harvard Business School. She has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Warwick and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of York. In 2018, Vivian was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to the economy and women in business.
George Weston
George Weston was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Associated British Foods in 2005. The company is a food producer in the UK and overseas and is also owner of Primark. It employs 137,000 people across fifty countries. He joined the company in Australia in 1988 and has held general management positions in flour milling, rice milling and baking before becoming Chief Executive. He read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford and Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He has been a trustee of the Garfield Weston Foundation since and of the Brooke Weston Multi Academy Trust since 1992. He is married with four children and lives in Buckinghamshire.
Philipp Hildebrand
Philipp Hildebrand has been Vice Chairman of BlackRock since October 2012. Before joining BlackRock, he served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) until January 2012. In that capacity, he was also a Director of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the Swiss Governor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and a member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), of which the Leaders of the G20 appointed him Vice Chairman in November 2011. Previously, Mr. Hildebrand was Chief Investment Officer of a Swiss private bank and a partner of Moore Capital Management in London. Between 2006 and 2009, he served as a member of the Strategic Committee of the French Debt Management Office. Mr. Hildebrand is a member of the Group of Thirty and an Honorary Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. He sits on the International Advisory Board of Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government and the International Leadership Council for Europe for the University of Toronto. He is a Chevalier de L’Ordre National du Mérite (France).
Mr. Hildebrand earned a BA from the University of Toronto, an MA from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, and a DPhil from the University of Oxford.
These roles are not remunerated. These appointments have been made in accordance with the Cabinet Office’s Governance Code on Public Appointments. The process is regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The Government’s Governance Code requires that any significant political activity undertaken by an appointee in the last five years is declared. This is defined as including holding office, public speaking, making a recordable donation or candidature for election. George has declared that he leafleted during the 2017 election for the Conservative Party. Dame Vivian and Philipp have made no such declarations.
