TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING

His Excellency the Governor, Peter Beckingham, and the Hon. Premier, Dr Rufus Ewing, co-chaired the 1st meeting of the TCI National Security Council (NSC) at the Hon. Hilly Ewing Building in Providenciales on Wednesday, 21 October 2015.

The Hon. Minister of Border Control and Employment, Her Excellency the Deputy Governor, the Hon. Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police, who make up the rest of the NSC, attended the meeting.

At this meeting the NSC:

  • Approved the terms of reference for the NSC to be drafted in the form of a bill to be taken to the House in the first quarter of next year;

  • The terms of reference include the formation of a wider National Security Advisory Group (NSAG), which would meet quarterly. Although not intended to be a statutory requirement, the NSC agreed to meet about ten times a year;

  • Instructed the Commissioner of Police to produce a revised TCI National Security Strategy that addresses the current and longer term security issues facing TCI to be presented at the next meeting of the NSC in Grand Turk on 10 November 2015;

  • Received a presentation from the Commissioner of Police on his immediate priorities for enhancing the capability of the RTCIPF including bringing in specialist officers in the field of serious crime investigation.
