Turks and Caicos: post-cabinet meeting statement 7 August 2019

His Excellency the Governor, Nigel Dakin, chaired the 19th meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday, 7 August 2019, at the Hilly Ewing Building, Providenciales.

All ministers were present, in addition to the Deputy Attorney General. HE the Deputy Governor and the Attorney General were absent on leave.

At this meeting Cabinet:

  • noted and approved, subject to additional information requested, recommendations set out in a paper on InterHealth Canada
  • approved a number of nominees for National Honours proposed by the National Honours and Awards Committee to the Premier and for the awards to be gazetted in accordance with the Law for conferment during October 2019
  • approved voting options on terminal dues at the upcoming Universal Postal Union Congress in September 2019 and a review of the TCI Postal System with a view to making it financially self-sustaining and a profitable operation
  • approved concessions on import duties for refurbishment works to the Point Grace Resort in accordance with the provisions of the Refurbishment Policy
  • approved the granting of a licence to Talbot’s Adventures Ltd, subject to specific requirements, to operate a restaurant and bar on parcel 60803/105 on Providenciales
  • noted an information paper on the provision and licensing of television services and noted the establishment of a working group by the Telecommunications Commission to draw up recommendations for new regulations for the provision of related services
  • approved measures and the drawing up of new legislation providing designated swim zones, access lanes and non-motorised water craft zones in non-protected coastal areas across the whole of the TCI
  • noted a paper provided by the Chair of the National Task Force and agreed immediate next steps.
  • approved a lease for the temporary relocation of South Caicos Clinic to the Ms. Denise Saunders Building, South Caicos
  • approve funds to enable the Anti-money Laundering Committee to meet the CFATF Mutual Evaluation team in August 2019
  • had a brief discussion about CCTV and similar options for consideration in consultation with the Police
  • approved the extension of the Queen Conch season to 15 August 2019 and the period for exports, after the season closes, to 29 August 2019
  • the Hon Premier praised the coordinated work between numerous authorities in response to a tragic incident in Middle Caicos on 5 August and thanked the DECR, Marine Branch, Child Services in the Police and Social Services Department and Tourist Board. A specific mention was made of the leadership of the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, the Hon Minister of Education and the District Commissioner of Middle Caicos
