UK and China agree new consulate for Wuhan in 2014
British Ambassador to China, Sebastian Wood, today welcomed the Chinese Government’s formal approval for the opening of a new British Consulate General in Wuhan.
The Ambassador said:
I am delighted that the UK is in a position to open a new Consulate General in Wuhan. This will be an important new base that will allow us to strengthen and deepen UK-China links. I believe there are enormous opportunities to boost bilateral trade, investment and education ties with Central China. This news marks a new era for bilateral relations in one of China’s fastest growing and most important cities.
The Consulate is expected to formally open its doors later this year. The UK Government also plans to open a new visa application centre in Wuhan during 2014.
The Ambassador said:
Our plans for a new Consulate General and new visa application centre demonstrate the importance that the UK attaches to Hubei Province and the city of Wuhan. Hubei has long been one of China’s cultural and economic hubs. And Wuhan will continue to be one of China’s most important cities, thanks to its strengths in education and high-value manufacturing.
I am also delighted that we have agreed that China can open a new Consulate General in the UK. Both openings are a very clear signal that our bilateral relationship is a good one, and that both sides see an even brighter future ahead.
