This month the UK in partnership with the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE) launched a technical assistance facility to support Solomon Islands to establish an independent energy regulator.

The energy regulator is an essential part of the government’s plan to transform the energy sector in Solomon Islands – increasing generation, bringing in investment and reducing prices. The energy regulator will ensure that the energy market operates fairly and efficiently, protecting consumers and investors.

This reform will be delivered by the Ministry supported by the UK Government’s Green Cities and Infrastructure programme.

Alongside technical expertise the programme creates a partnership with the UK regulator the Office of Gas and Electricity Market (Ofgem)

Speaking on behalf of the Solomon Islands Government Permanent Secretary of MMERE, Dr Chris Vehe said:

The regulatory framework for the Solomon Islands Energy Sector should focus on enabling reliable, affordable, sustainable, and secure energy access for all citizens, aligning with the country’s goals of reducing energy costs, increasing accessibility, and transitioning toward renewable sources.

Speaking at the launch the British High Commissioner His Excellency Thomas Coward said:

The UK is excited to be supporting the Ministry with this exciting reform. The government has set out an ambitious reform agenda for the electricity sector. Success will mean investment, increased generation across the country and crucially lower energy prices for Solomon Islanders.
