GREAT for Partnership

This week’s visit to Australia by the UK Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr Liam Fox, shone a light on the strong and growing links between the UK and Australia.

His programme included meetings with Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, Australian Foreign Secretary, Julie Bishop and Australia’s Minister for Tourism and Trade, Steven Ciobo on working together to promote the rules based international trading system and deepening the trade and investment relationship between the UK and Australia.

A highlight of the visit was a ‘GREAT for Partnership’ event with the Australian British Chamber of Commerce in Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens. With the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge as a stunning backdrop, Dr Liam Fox as guest of honour delivered a key-note speech to a 240 strong business audience, highlighting the strength of our relationship and future opportunities.

Dr Fox also took the stage with Ticky Fullerton of Sky News Business for an in-depth conversation on free-trade, Brexit and the fresh opportunities that it will present.

Our successful GREAT Britain campaign was on show throughout the evening featuring the ‘best of British’ and celebrating the modern partnership that the UK and Australia enjoy.

Three stunning McLaren supercars wowed guests and passers-by, and a Clipper Ventures training yacht in the harbour promoted our Sport is GREAT campaign, signalling the arrival of the Clipper round the world yacht race in Sydney next week and Clipper Venture’s support of the Invictus Games in 2018.

Guests were treated to a British inspired menu by Cook & Waiter’s renowned event chef David O’Brien, who originally hails from Liverpool in the UK. Dinner was finished off with some great British cheese from Somerdale and a sample of Diageo’s Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Scotch Whisky.

Michael Ward, British Consul-General and Director-General, UK Department for International Trade, Australasia said:

It was a great privilege to welcome our International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox to Australia this week – it was an extremely successful programme of meetings and events with business and government.

The ‘GREAT for partnership’ event by Sydney Harbour was an excellent showcase of the UK-Australia trade relationship and I am excited about the fresh opportunities in sectors like technology, financial services, infrastructure and life sciences that will allow us to build even stronger UK-Australia links.
