This week India will host a first-of-its-kind National Policy roundtable that will work towards more holistic support for women survivors of burn violence. The roundtable in New Delhi on 23 March is organised by Chennai-based NGO, International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC), part of a national initiative supported by the British High Commission in India.

Sir Dominic Asquith KCMG, British High Commissioner to India said:

I’m very proud that we are supporting PCVC on this pioneering initiative to share knowledge and good practice and to create new public, private, civil society partnerships to help women burn survivors get better support. This is part of our continuing support to prevent and tackle violence against women across India. We are committed to build awareness and capacity and ensure greater social participation on this and other issues.

Dr. Prasanna Gettu, CEO of Chennai’s PCVC said:

We’re grateful to the British High Commission in India for their support. Thanks to visionary leadership from Chennai’s Kilpauk Medical College & Hospital in particular and more broadly Tamil Nadu’s Health Department, PCVC has evolved a model that matches sensitive medical support with sensitive psycho-social support to women survivors of burn violence. Through this new initiative, we’re delighted to be able to draw on and feed into knowledge, experience and insights from across India. We are also grateful to the Government of India’s Ministry of Health for the interest they have shown in integrating the crucial psycho-social element into burn-care.

Representatives from Government of India’s Ministry of Health, National Commission of Women and senior medical and non-medical representatives interested in more holistic support for women burn survivors will attend the roundtable. Others include senior public, private and civil society representatives from the four target states of Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
