UK commits new support to the GBVF Response Fund to address gender-based violence in Mpumalanga
As we celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, the UK has announced new support for community-based organisations tackling gender-based violence and femicide.
The additional resources are earmarked to ensure a greater focus in the Mpumalanga area, given the heightened rates of the social and structural drivers of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), such as lack of economic empowerment, harmful traditional norms like ‘ukuthwala’ (or bride kidnapping) and inadequate support services.
Sazini Mojapelo, CEO of the GBVF Response Fund said:
The UK has played a pivotal role in ensuring that the GBVF Response Fund is able to provide much-needed support for communities greatly affected by gender-based violence and femicide, serving as one of the largest donors and active partners in ensuring the safeguarding of beneficiaries. The support has been instrumental in enabling the fund to offer crucial assistance to communities impacted by GBVF.
The committed resources will ensure that identified gaps are adequately addressed and ensuring the continued work of community-based organisations. Together, the GBVF Response Fund and the UK aim to enhance prevention, protection, and support mechanisms for those affected by GBVF.
The GBVF Response Fund and the UK are committed to combatting GBVF and fostering safer, more resilient communities. By working together, we strive to create lasting change and empower survivors while addressing the root causes of GBVF.
