UK encourages Honduras to keep investigating journalists’ attacks
The 3rd of May marks the 21st anniversary of World Press Freedom Day.
The day was established to celebrate freedom of press and remind governments of their responsibility to uphold the right to Freedom of Expression enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
On this day the United Kingdom would like to pay tribute to the work of journalists and social communicators in Honduras who are exposed to high levels of violence and aggression.
To mark this day, the British Ambassador to Honduras, Sarah Dickson, said:
The UK is working to support the efforts of the Attorney General’s Office and other institutions to tackle impunity for crimes perpetrated against journalists and human rights defenders in Honduras.
We also take this opportunity to condemn the recent murder of Radio Progreso worker, Carlos Mejía Orellana, and to highlight the importance of effectively implementing any precautionary measures issued by the Inter-American Commission on Human rights for journalists and human rights defenders.
