UK Foreign Office Minister of State, Baroness Anelay, travels to Honduras
Baroness Joyce Anelay, UK Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will travel to Honduras next week to discuss further strengthening UK relations with the country and enhancing mutual cooperation on human rights, the fight against corruption and women’s empowerment.
This is Baroness Anelay’s first official visit to the country, and the first by a British Minister in 15 years. During her visit, she will meet with Honduran Government officials and the recently installed Mission of Support Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) to stress the UK’s commitment to open and transparent governance.
During her two-day visit, Baroness Anelay will hold meetings with members of civil society and a group of prominent women to address key human rights challenges. She will also meet with the President of Congress, Mauricio Oliva, to discuss progress on a joint UK-funded project based on studying the effectiveness of current laws against human trafficking in Honduras.
Finally, Baroness Anelay will host a reception for key Honduran leaders to reiterate the United Kingdom’s intention to remain an important global player and an outward looking country post-Brexit. Baroness Anelay’s visit to Honduras forms the third leg of a regional tour, during which she will also visit Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico.
Speaking ahead of her visit, Baroness Anelay said:
I look forward to my visit to Honduras next week. I hope that my time in the country will strengthen the UK-Honduras relationship, based on our shared values, priorities and interests. Following the decision made by the British public to leave the EU our global commitment remains unchanged, and Honduras remains an important partner for the United Kingdom in Latin America.
