The Government of Ghana and the UK have launched a new Strategic Partnership focused on economic development, job creation, investment and trade. This new Strategic Partnership signals a step change in the UK and Ghana trading relationship, one that builds upon common values and equally shared goals.

The highlight of this is the UK-Ghana Investment Summit on 15 – 16 October, where over 50 UK companies will be in Accra to discuss opportunities in Ghana with government and private sector partners. The Summit is being organised collaboratively between the UK Government, the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ghana Investment Promotion Council.

The Investment Summit will support high level discussions on trade and investment to further nearly £1bn of trade and FDI opportunities currently under consideration in infrastructure, industrial and manufacturing sectors.

His Excellency The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be the special guest of honour and is set to deliver the keynote address at the Summit. He will be joined by the UK’s Minister for Trade & Export Promotion, Baroness Fairhead.

Alongside the Investment Summit, the UK and Ghana has established a new biannual ministerial dialogue, known as the UK-Ghana Business Council. It meets this week for the first time, and will be hosted by His Excellency Vice President Dr Bawumia and the UK Minister for Africa, Harriett Baldwin. It will set joint priorities and drive progress that will create mutual prosperity and support economic development, job creation, trade and investment. Going forward, it will be the vehicle for bringing the best of the UK private sector offer, including leveraging finance from the City of London and attracting world-class UK expertise on infrastructure. It will enable Ghana to move ‘beyond aid’ through economic transformation, and help position the UK as the G7’s number one investor in Africa.

The UK-Ghana Business Council and the Investment Summit are clear signs that the UK’s reinvigorated offer is focused on achieving results for both sides. These examples follow the UK’s recently announced £20 million Jobs and Economic.

Transformation (JET) Programme, which will help create over 15,000 jobs for Ghanaians and is expected to facilitate over £50 million of additional private sector investment. This package will trigger long-term economic growth that will move Ghana to greater economic self-reliance and deliver vital services and jobs for Ghanaians - and cement the UK as an indispensable trading partner. Ahead of the Summit British High Commissioner, Mr Iain Walker said:

The UK has been working in close partnership with Ghana to revitalise our strong trading relationship, and ensure it advances our shared prosperity goals.

We share a common history, but I want to focus on how the UK and Ghana are changing to meet our shared vision of the future, one that build upon our already strong bilateral partnership. I am delighted that our joint ambition to boost two-way trade and investment has led to a new Strategic Partnership and an Investment Summit. I am confident that the best of the UK private sector can accelerate President Akufo-Addo’s Beyond Aid agenda and position the UK as an indispensable trading partner for years to come.

Tony Burkson, CEO of UK Ghana Chamber of Commerce said:

As Ghana continues to grow as a nation, so does its immense potential to be a beacon of trade and prosperity within the region. This Summit is a great opportunity for British Businesses to discover that potential and to discuss first hand with the Government of Ghana and Ghanaian businesses about partnerships for investment.

The President of Ghana and his Ministers will be taking time to talk about the wealth of opportunities across a wide spectrum of industries, which demonstrates how much importance they place on not just the summit but on working with British business to grow the economy. We are bullish about the prospects here and would be encouraging more UK business leaders and decision makers to come to and invest in Ghana.
