UK helps the fight against illegal wildlife trade in Uganda
The Defence Adviser handed over UK-funded facilities at Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.

On 19 July 2016, the Defence Adviser at the British High Commission in Kampala, Lt Col Mike Nicholls, attended the formal handover ceremony for a brand new Armoury and Secure storage facility at Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. The guest of honour at the event was the Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Dr Andrew Seguya. The Ugandan Conservation Foundation (UCF) was represented by its General Manager, Anne-Marie Weeden.

In his keynote speech, Dr Seguya thanked the UK for its continued support to the UWA in the fight against the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT). He also recognised the UK’s support in developing community involvement in sustaining Uganda’s National Parks and wildlife, as part of the country’s heritage. After the speeches, the facility was opened and officials explained how it would be used, including demonstrations of the destruction of seized traps and snares.
Delivery of the UK-funded project to provide these new facilities to the UWA at Queen Elizabeth National Park has been managed by the UCF.
