UK in JAPAN 2019-20 campaign to launch in September 2019
Prime Minister May announced the celebration of ‘UK in JAPAN 2019-20’ during Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the UK.
‘UK in JAPAN 2019-20’ is a campaign that will launch in September 2019, coinciding with the start of the Rugby World Cup and run through to the Olympics, continuing until the closing of the Tokyo Paralympic Games in September 2020. The UK has recently hosted both events; the Rugby World Cup in 2015 and the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.
An ambitious joint initiative by the British Embassy Tokyo and British Council, it will use the catalyst of these two global sporting moments to showcase the UK business, science, innovation, culture, the arts, education, and diversity and inclusion and their links with Japan. A series of events and activities will take place across all of these themes to demonstrate the strengths and opportunities for continued and new partnerships between the UK and Japan.
Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Japan, Paul Madden commented ‘The next couple of years will be a unique opportunity for Japan in the global spotlight as it hosts a series of major international events. I’m glad that we can also contribute through a diverse programme of events celebrating the best of Britain and the strength of our relationship with Japan in a wide range of fields’.
The British Council’s Director for Japan, Matt Burney added ‘Our cultural relationship provides a very strong foundation from which we can build trust, learn from each other and enable links to flourish. There is no better time to celebrate our bilateral partnership through the world-class programme of cultural activity that will form an integral part of UK in JAPAN 2019-20’.
