UK travel grants to boost researcher links with South Africa
A Travel Grant Scheme to support collaboration between UK and international researchers.

As part of the ‘Researcher Links’ programme, the British Council has launched a Travel Grant Scheme to support collaboration between UK and international researchers. South Africa is one of 19 countries covered by the Scheme. The initiative focuses on early career researchers and aims to: increase the levels of collaboration between researchers in the UK and selected partner countries; build capacity in early career researchers for international engagement; build capacity for international research collaboration in developing economies; and enhance the reputation of the UK as partner of choice for research and higher education.
The Travel Grant Scheme is open for applications until 24 November 2013, from UK and South African researchers that meet the necessary criteria, to facilitate travel until April 2015.
Researchers that reside in the UK can apply for funding to spend up to three months at a university or research institution in one of the nineteen partner countries, and those residing in a partner country can apply for funding to come to the UK. There are no priority areas specified for South African related applications - all research areas are covered.
The Scheme complements the work of the UK Science and Innovation Network in South Africa, where our science and innovation footprint is considerable and growing. We have a formal bilateral Science and Technology Agreement (since 1995) and a rich array of partnerships between our academics and researchers, both at individual and institution level. South Africa is the fifth most successful country in accessing EU Framework Programme (FP7) research funding, partnering in these with the UK more than any other country.
