UK welcomes UN report on ISIL atrocities in Syria
Foreign Office Minister, Tobias Ellwood, welcomes UN report detailing ISIL’s brutality in Syria and underlines the need for those responsible to be held to account.
Speaking after the publication of the UN Commission of Inquiry’s report, Tobias Ellwood, Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East, said:
The latest report by the UN Commission of Inquiry highlights further shocking evidence of ISIL’s efforts to indoctrinate and terrorise the Syrian people. It details ISIL’s continued brutal targeting of civilians, including women, children and minority communities, in its efforts to ensure the submission of those under its control. ISIL’s insistence on making a public show of its victims means that those living in ISIL controlled areas are often too frightened to speak out.
The UK is committed to ensuring that those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity are held to account. We continue to fund the investigation of atrocities committed by both the Assad regime and ISIL so that all those responsible can be brought to justice. The UK is playing a key role in international efforts to bring an end to ISIL’s reign of terror including by contributing to international air strikes in Iraq and supporting the Syrian moderate opposition who are fighting both against the terrorists of ISIL and the brutal tyranny of the Assad regime.
