Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last night met with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi. The delegation, led by UK Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sir Mark Lyall-Grant, discussed matters of mutual interest between Kenya and the UNSC, including South Sudan and continued efforts towards a sustainable peace in Somalia. The meeting followed the UNSC delegation’s historic visit to Somalia to review progress made by the Federal Government with assistance from the international community.
Speaking after the meeting with President Kenyatta, Ambassador Sir Mark Lyall-Grant said:
the UNSC delegation had a productive meeting with the President in which we discussed peace and security. We are grateful to the Government of Kenya for its contribution towards the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and are committed to working with Kenya and international partners to tackle the shared threat still posed by Al-Shabaab. The UNSC visit to Mogadishu underlines the commitment of the international community to Somalia’s progress toward peace and stability. Continued regional support and engagement is crucial if we are to build upon the significant progress already made in Somalia.
