The UK welcomed Jordan's longstanding hospitality for hosting Syrian refugees and recommended strengthening protections for migrant workers and combating violence against women.

UPR in Geneva

Thank you, Mr Vice President,

The UK welcomes the positive steps taken by Jordan towards implementing their UPR recommendations, including the repeal of Article 308 of the Penal Code, and the launch of the National Action Plan to advance implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

We also welcome Jordan’s longstanding hospitality hosting over 650,000 registered Syrian refugees since 2011.

We recommend:

  1. Legislate to penalise discrimination, including on the basis of gender, race, age, disability, religion or belief, and sexual orientation.

  2. Strengthen legal protection for migrant workers by increasing labour inspections and public sector training, prosecuting employers who confiscate employees’ passports and bringing penalties for sex trafficking crimes in line with other serious crimes

  3. Establish a mechanism to implement the recommendations of the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women.

Thank you Mr Vice President.
