Thank you Mr President.

We welcome the Government’s commitment towards improving human rights and democracy, their intention to abolish the death penalty and to repeal the Sedition Act. We encourage the necessary legislation at the earliest opportunity.

The UK urges the Malaysian Government to fulfil their commitments to fostering a more inclusive society that protects the rights of all its citizens, of all religions, including minority communities.

We recommend Malaysia:

  1. Ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, The International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination, and the International Convention against Torture.

  2. Amend and repeal legislation used to arbitrarily detain individuals without trial, including the Prevention of Crime Act, Security Offences (Special Measures) and the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

  3. Fully implement the 2016-2020 National Action Plan to combat human trafficking.

Thank you Mr President.
