The Universal Periodic Review takes place in Geneva, Switzerland.

Thank you,

The UK recognises progress in Ethiopia. We welcome the opening of political and media space, the release of political prisoners and journalists, reform of the Civil Society law and commitment to further legal reform.

However, continuing high levels of displacement of people in Ethiopia resulting from ongoing ethnic conflicts is concerning. We hope the internal borders commission will be supported to fulful its mandate.

We recommend:

1) Enhancing Federal Government efforts to provide security for Ethiopia’s citizens and to prevent abuses, by intervening in conflicts to ensure the rule of law and the facilitation of local peace settlements.

2) Ratifying the ILO Protocol of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930, (P029).

3) Adopting an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN Treaty Body elections.

Thank you.
