Vacancy Notice – Political Attaché

The British Embassy is looking for a full-time political attaché, initially on a 1-year contract, starting on 1 August 2013.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The role combines policy, administrative and logistical work, providing high quality reporting and advice on a range of policy issues, building a network of contacts across Danish government departments, helping the Political team to organise visits, as well as providing administrative support.

Duties and responsibilities include

  • Policy lead on environment, agriculture and fisheries: Analysis, reporting, networking, lobbying and advice on Danish policy in these areas, principally in an EU context.

  • Support for policy lead on climate and energy issues: Analysis and reporting both on Danish domestic and EU-related climate and energy policy.

  • Policy support in other areas: on an ad-hoc basis provide policy support for colleagues to handle peaks in workload (on, for example, social policy issues, or on EU institutional issues)

  • Arranging, and helping others to arrange, visits for UK Ministers, senior officials and Parliamentarians.

  • Handling government to government correspondence, eg Ministerial letters, Note Verbales.

  • Document registrar and Open Government Liaison Officer: Ensuring documents stored and registered appropriately in line with UK government rules.

  • Assistance with diplomatic bag despatching and receiving.

  • Providing leave cover for Ambassador’s PA.

Experience and Skills Required

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Danish

  • An understanding of Danish politics and of international relations

  • Experience of working in a governmental or international environment

  • A flexible attitude, and ability to switch easily between policy, logistical and administrative work

  • Proven ability to prioritise, handle multiple tasks and respond quickly to changing circumstances

  • The role would particularly suit a graduate with a minimum of 2 years work experience
