The Secretary of State for Wales David Jones has today welcomed the reaffirmed commitment by the Welsh Government for North Wales rail electrification.

David Jones said:

As many people will know, the case for rail electrification in North Wales is one of my top priorities. So I know that the reaffirmed commitment by the Welsh government today will be welcomed across North Wales.

Improving rail infrastructure is key to economic growth, which is why I called the meeting of the North Wales Ambition Board with local leaders from Cheshire and the Welsh government in November last year.

The support was excellent and it was agreed that the development of the business case would be taken forward by Councillor Huw Evans, the leader of Denbighshire Council and the leader of the North Wales Ambition Board. He, no doubt, will welcome the support from the Welsh government.

I am personally pleased that this issue has engaged all levels of government. When the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and I met with Carl Sargeant in November, we discussed the importance of the business case being truly joined up across all levels of governments. So I welcome the opportunity for us to work together to deliver this important project for the people of Wales.
