Welsh Secretary David Jones has urged Welsh local authorities and developers to bid for funding being made available today for the building of new train stations.

The Department for Transport has confirmed that £20 million is available for small town stations to bring rail services closer to people’s homes. The New Station Fund is targeted at ‘shovel ready’ projects which will provide long-term benefits to passengers and the economy. The fund will be managed by Network Rail and bids should be submitted by 25th February.

Mr Jones said:

I urge local authorities, train operators and developers to bid for this money. The New Station Fund is available across Wales and is a great opportunity for smaller communities to benefit from improved rail facilities.
