Secretary of State for Wales, David Jones met senior executives of Tata Steel at its Port Talbot site today [24 Jan 2013].

Mr Jones discussed the issues facing the steel industry with senior executives and trade union representatives, and was updated on the level of support being provided to employees following the recent redundancy announcement.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Jones said:

I was pleased to meet senior representatives of Tata Steel and the unions today and to have the opportunity to hear about the challenges the industry is facing in difficult international trading conditions.  It was helpful to discuss how government and the organisation can work together to ensure Tata’s UK operations can remain competitive.

The commitment from Tata and the union representatives to support its employees through this difficult period is commendable. There is clearly a strong commitment  to retain a  healthy steel making presence in Wales.  I am looking forward to returning to Port Talbot in the very near future to see the steelworks in action.
