World Police and Fire Games, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Ambassador Dominick Chilcott continues to strengthen British-Irish relations by promoting the World Police and Fire Games.
They look forward to this year’s global event to be held in Belfast from 1-10 August 2013
Former World Police and Fire Games medal winners joined representatives from An Garda Síochána, Irish Customs, Fire and Prison Services at a special reception hosted by British Ambassador to Ireland Dominick Chilcott to highlight the huge range of opportunities for competitors and spectators at the upcoming World Police and Fire Games taking place in Northern Ireland from 1 to 10 August 2013.
Michael Ring TD, Minister of State, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, Richard Hedderman, Dublin Fire Service and Director General Michael Donnellan, Irish Prison Service were joined by colleagues from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, NI Fire & Rescue Service and the NI Prison Service to hear details about this year’s Games.
Speaking at the event Judith Gillespie, Deputy Chief Constable, Police Service of Northern Ireland and Chair of the WPFG Board said,
As we look forward to welcoming the many hundreds of fellow services colleagues from the Republic of Ireland already signed up for the Games, we would like to encourage even more officers along with their colleagues in Irish Fire, Customs and Prisons Services, to register and take part in the 56 sports which will be held at 41 venues across Northern Ireland.
The WPFG provides an excellent opportunity for both serving and retired officers and their families to enjoy the very best of Northern Ireland and carry on the tradition of the Games by enjoying competitive sport, making new friends or catching up with colleagues from other countries.
We’re also very grateful to the British Ambassador for hosting this reception and hopefully at the Games closing ceremony on 10 August we will be celebrating a record haul of medals for officers from throughout the island of Ireland!
The World Police and Fire Games is the third largest multi sport event in the world and takes place every two years. Northern Ireland won the right to host the 2013WPFG in 2007 in a competitive pitch led by former Olympic medallist Dame Mary Peters. This will be the first time in its 28 year history that the Games will be held in the UK and only the third time in Europe. To date over 7,000 athletes from 62 countries are committed to compete in the 56 sports featured this August.
