The Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner has established a national surveillance camera strategy advisory committee to advise on specific areas relating to surveillance camera systems. A standards group has also been set up to work on simplifying and improving the surveillance camera system standards framework. An advisory group has been established to scrutinise the deployment and operation of automatic number plate recognition as a surveillance tool.
National surveillance camera strategy advisory committee
The national surveillance camera advisory committee supports the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner by considering and offering advice on matters related to the National Surveillance Camera Strategy for England and Wales as follows:
- encourage compliance with the surveillance camera code
- review the operation of the code
- provide advice about the code (and breaches of it)
- prepare reports about the functions of the commissioner
- report against the strands of the National Surveillance Camera Strategy for publication in the Commissioner’s Annual Report to Parliament
The committee will also consider and advise on issues concerning surveillance camera systems which are referred to the committee by the commissioner.
Surveillance camera standards group
The surveillance camera standards group has been established to advise the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner and the surveillance camera advisory committee on matters within its remit such as the simplification of the surveillance camera standards landscape.
The group will provide advice on all matters related to the preparation, implementation and monitoring of surveillance camera standards within the remit of the surveillance camera systems codes of practice.

ANPR independent advisory group (automatic number plate recognition)
The ANPR independent advisory group (ANPR IAG) has been established to scrutinise the deployment and operation of automatic number plate recognition as a surveillance tool. It comprises specialist external interests as well as the police, Information Commissioner’s Office and the Home Office.
