Inheritance Tax: general enquiries

Online

How Inheritance Tax works: thresholds, rules and allowances

Ask HMRC online

Ask HMRC’s digital assistant to get a quick answer to your query about:

  • valuing an estate
  • paying Inheritance Tax

The digital assistant cannot answer questions about an Inheritance Tax account (IHT400) that has already been sent.

If the digital assistant cannot help you, you can ask to transfer to an HMRC adviser if they’re available.

Phone

Call HMRC for advice on Inheritance Tax after someone has died. HMRC can help with:

  • understanding your Inheritance Tax responsibilities
  • confirming the forms you need
  • getting paper copies of forms
  • completing Inheritance Tax forms

We do not give advice on how to pass on your own property, money, and possessions.
