Investigatory Powers Tribunal
The Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) investigates complaints about the alleged conduct of public bodies in relation to members of the public under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) 2000.
This includes complaints about the use of intrusive powers such as phone-tapping by intelligence services, law enforcement agencies and public authorities.
The tribunal is an independent public body exercising judicial functions. Though the Home Office is responsible for ensuring the IPT has the resources it needs to do its job, the tribunal operates entirely independently of ministers and Parliament.
IPT is a tribunal of the Home Office.
