About us
The Legal Services Commission (LSC) was established in 2000 and ran the legal aid scheme in England and Wales. The LSC was replaced by the Legal Aid Agency, an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice, on 1 April 2013.
Our work is essential to the fair, effective and efficient operation of the civil and criminal justice systems. We are a delivery organisation which commissions and procures legal aid services from providers (solicitors, barristers and the not-for-profit sector).
We also make sure that people get the information, advice and legal help they need to deal with a wide range of problems.
Each year the LAA helps more than 2 million people to deal with their legal problems.
