About us

The Office for the Internal Market (OIM) supports the effective operation of the UK’s internal market, and provides expert and independent advice to the UK government and devolved governments.

The OIM is part of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

We independently advise the UK government and devolved governments (Northern Ireland Executive, Scottish Government and Welsh Government) on how specific laws, rules and regulations affect the UK’s internal market. We also report on how the internal market is operating.

Our functions are set out in the UK Internal Market Act 2020.

What is the Office for the Internal Market

Responsibilities

The OIM provides expert, technical and independent advice to the UK government and devolved governments about the internal market.

Our advice is non-binding; we can draw attention to issues but cannot require lawmakers to change policy or legislation.

We’re keen to engage with businesses, consumers, professionals and other stakeholders about your experience of operating across the UK’s internal market.

Annual and 5-yearly reports

We also monitor and assess how the UK’s internal market is operating. We publish:

  • an annual report on the operation of the internal market in the UK
  • a periodic report at least every 5 years that assesses the arrangements established by the UK Internal Market Act 2020
