Alicia Herbert OBE

Biography

Alicia Herbert OBE is the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Director of Education, Gender and Equalities and the UK’s Special Envoy for Gender Equality.

Previously Alicia worked in academia, the World Bank and represented the UK government in senior roles in Mozambique, Sudan and Nigeria.

Over the past 25 years, she has played a leading role in shaping international development policy and driving programme delivery and policy reform in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Director of Education, Gender and Equality

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Director of Education, Gender and Equality (EdGE) leads on the UK’s international education strategy. This includes an ambitious agenda to get children and young people learning, especially girls (Sustainable Development Goal 4). The director:

  • oversees progress towards gender objectives across the FCDO, which is a core part of the UK being a force for good
  • promotes broader equality and inclusion, so that the UK government can address inequality for the poorest and most excluded

Special Envoy for Gender Equality

Special envoys use their expertise to develop a greater coherent effort in making sure that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office can work closely and effectively with foreign powers.

The Special Envoy for Gender Equality represents the UK government internationally for our shared objectives on gender equality and the rights and empowerment of women and girls, reinforcing the UK’s position as a force for good. The special envoy covers all aspects of gender equality to support domestic and international work.
