Biography
Andrew Caldwell is taking on the role of Interim Head of the Defence and Security Accelerator from July 2020 while current Head Anita Friend, goes on maternity leave.
Andrew has previously worked for the Government Chief Scientific Adviser as Deputy Director Science Policy and during the Covid-19 emergency has supported the Civil Contingencies Secretariat. Andrew previously spent three years as Head Scientific Advice, in MOD’s Defence Science and Technology directorate.
Andrew has a background in materials engineering and operational analysis having started his career at British Steel.
He moved to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory in 1997 where he had a number of roles, including Defence Policy, Defence Engagement, Account Manager and supporting the Strategic Direction of UK operations.
Andrew is a Fellow of the Operations Research Society and has an MSc in Peace Operations from George Mason University’s School of Public Policy. He was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense medal for exceptional public service in 2010.
Interim Head of the Defence and Security Accelerator
The Head of the Defence and Security Accelerator is responsible for the development, operation and leadership of the Accelerator and its staff. They will also build strong relationships between the Accelerator and defence and security departments within the UK Government, industry (including small and medium-sized enterprises), academia and other partners, to deliver value to the security and prosperity of the UK. They report to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory Capability and Delivery Director and the Accelerator Development Board.
