Andrew Staines

Biography

Andrew Staines is the United Kingdom’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative (Economic) to the United Nations agencies in Geneva. He is also Deputy Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization.

Andrew has worked extensively on trade, intellectual property and economic issues. His previous FCO (now the FCDO) roles include Economic Counsellor in Geneva, First Secretary for Trade Policy in the British Embassy, Washington DC. He also served as Director, Office of the Director General, in the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva. Prior to joining the FCO, Andrew held a number of senior roles in the private sector and served as a specialist adviser to the UK’s Parliamentary Committee responsible for finance and economic issues.

Andrew has been appointed as chairperson to a number of international bodies. He currently serves as the chair of the Working Party on the Accession of The Bahamas to the WTO. He previously chaired: WIPO’s Program & Budget Committee; ISAR, the UN body responsible for accounting and sustainability reporting; the WTO Information Technology Agreement committee; and the WTO’s Antidumping Committee.

Andrew holds a MA in economics from Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and of the Royal Geographical Society, and is a CFA charter holder. He has completed the Senior Managers in Government program at the Harvard Kennedy School, the Leadership Development Program at the National University of Singapore and studied intellectual property law at Stanford Law School.
