Hilary Newiss

Biography

Hilary is a lawyer and former partner in a City law firm, specialising in Intellectual Property. Since leaving the City, has served on several public boards in the science, innovation, health and ethics fields including The Human Genetics Commission, the National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care, Biobank Ethics and Governance Board, the Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information and the Francis Crick Institute. She is currently a Trustee of the Natural History Museum, where she chairs the Audit and Risk Committee, a non-executive Director of the Health Innovation Network and a Non- Executive Director of the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult. She has just retired as Chair of National Voices, the umbrella group of charities advocating for care to revolve around patients.

She served on the Intellectual Property Advisory Committee 20 years ago and chaired the subcommittee on copyright. She is currently on the advisory panels for data and life sciences for the Practical Law Company, where she was a founding author of the copyright and designs sections.

Non-executive board member, IPO

The role of our Steering Board is to advise Ministers, through our Director General, on our strategies and performance (including targets) as set out in our Corporate Plan. It also provides guidance from a commercial standpoint on our operation and development across a range of issues.

During the last 12 months, the Steering Board has provided advice and guidance on a wide range of topics, such as our Corporate Plan, Agency Targets, Intellectual Property Policy, Accounts and Risk Management.

The Steering Board meets six times a year.
