Biography

Joanna Markbreiter is the Deputy British Ambassador and Development Counsellor to Liberia.

Joanna’s previous roles include:

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: Protracted Crisis Advisor, Nigeria.
Department for International Development : Health Policy Advisor for malaria, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases.
Ministry of Justice: Parliamentary Strategy Advisor.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Corporate Strategy Manager
Department for Business and Trade: Policy Advisor

Before joining the Civil Service, Joanna worked in the NGO sector in Geneva, Switzerland as a global health policy and advocacy specialist.

Joanna is passionate about bringing people together through music. She has performed across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and America, and is a patron of the Amemuso choir in Abuja, Nigeria.

Deputy Head of Mission, Liberia

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas embassy or high commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
