John Hamilton

Biography

John Hamilton was recently appointed Resident British Commissioner at the British High Commission in St John’s.

Before St John’s he worked at the British Embassy in Turkmenistan as the Deputy Head of Mission. 

John has spent much of his career in Africa with postings in Nairobi, Cairo, Kampala, Abuja and Windhoek, working on a wide range of issues including consular affairs, political relations and communications. Outside of Africa he has also served in Kolkata and at NATO in Brussels.

John was awarded an MBE for services to British foreign policy in the New Year Honours List 2021.  He is married with two grown up children.

Resident British Commissioner to Antigua and Barbuda

Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister.
