Jonathan Croft

Biography

Jonathan Croft is the UK’s Special Envoy for the Sahel.

Jonathan was the Deputy Ambassador to Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Cabo Verde from 2021 to 2024. Before that he worked as Political Counsellor in Myanmar, China foreign policy team leader, in Cabinet Office on South Asia and Afghanistan and as the FCDO’s lead India analyst.

Jonathan started his career in local government and has a master’s degree in international law and international relations.

UK Special Envoy for the Sahel

Special representatives use their expertise to develop a greater coherent effort in making sure that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) works closely and effectively with foreign powers.

The role of the Special Envoy for the Sahel is to lead the UK government’s response to international activity in the Sahel region. The Sahel is a band of sub-Saharan terrain that stretches from Mauritania in the west to Chad in the east. It is beset by numerous political, security and humanitarian challenges.
