Katherine Smitton

Biography

Ms Katherine Smitton has been appointed British Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan in succession to Mr Timothy Marschall Jones. She took up her appointment in October 2024. Before this Ms Smitton was Deputy Head of Mission in Algiers.

Ms Smitton’s previous overseas postings have included Deputy Head of Mission in Nepal and leading the UK’s Counter Terrorism work in Pakistan. At the FCDO in London, Katherine has been Deputy Head of Eastern Europe and Central Asia Department and has worked on the Near East and Levant.

Ms Smitton has a Master’s Degree in Russian and Post-Soviet Politics from University College London. She speaks Russian and French.

The Ambassador represents His Majesty The King and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the embassy and its consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
