Mary-Kate Thomson
Biography
Mary-Kate Thomson became the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy Yangon in February 2023.
Before taking up her role in Yangon Mary-Kate was the UK’s Attaché to Northern Ghana. Mary-Kate joined the FCO (now FCDO) in 2013 and has covered a range of foreign policy, development, and security roles. She has represented the UK Government in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Ghana. Mary-Kate is global Co-chair of the FCDO Women’s Network.
Mary-Kate holds a Masters in Ancient history and archaeology from Oxford University, and postgraduate qualifications in international development and international relations from the University of London and Duke University, North Carolina.
Mary-Kate is married with two children.
Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy Yangon
The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically an important advisor to the Head of Mission. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Head of Mission.
