Matt Cannell

Biography

Matt Cannell has been British Deputy High Commissioner to Pakistan since November 2024. Prior to taking up his current position he was British Deputy High Commissioner and Development Director (2021 to 2024) to Bangladesh.

Matt joined the UK Government’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in 2005 and has also worked for the Department for International Development (DfID) and Cabinet Office.

Matt has held a number of roles in Headquarters. He was Portfolio Director, Transformation, leading work to create the FCDO following the merger (DfID) and Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 2020.  He also worked in the FCO’s Strategy Directorate as a Deputy Director.

Over half of his career with the UK government has been spent overseas. From 2014 to 2017, he was the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan. He served in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2014 and from 2005 to 2009 represented the UK at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York.

British Deputy High Commissioner to Pakistan

The Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad supports the High Commissioner in leading the Islamabad mission and, when the High Commissioner is out of the country,is responsible, as Acting High Commissioner, for leading the Pakistan mission.
