Melanie Brownridge

Biography

Melanie is currently Chief Research and Development Officer at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) where she has responsibility for the NDA group Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) strategy and NDA’s RD&I portfolio. This portfolio includes the cross sector collaborative innovation programme developed to access transformational innovation from within and outside the nuclear sector and accelerate deployment across the NDA group.

Melanie has worked in the nuclear industry since 1996, beginning her career with BNFL (later National Nuclear Laboratory). Here she held a variety of roles from operational plant support to programme management for waste characterisation. She was previously a member of Nuclear Innovation and Research Advisory Board (NIRAB) and a Non-Executive Director of Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) and Radioactive Waste Management Ltd (RWM).

Among other roles Melanie is also a visiting Professor at the University of Leeds and an International Expert Advisor for the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) in Japan. Melanie is also a Member of the UKAEA Programme Advisory Committee and the UK Fusion Technical Advisory Group. In recognition of her leadership and commitment to flexible working, Melanie was awarded the Women in Nuclear Champion of the Year in 2020.
