Mr Nathaniel Copsey

Biography

Mr Nathaniel Copsey was appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria in March 2024 and took up his post in October 2024. 

Before his appointment in Sofia, Mr Copsey was the Foreign Secretary’s Chief Speechwriter, covering the full range of UK foreign policy issues. But the great bulk of his career has focused on Europe, particularly the European Union and Eastern Europe.  He joined the British Government in 2015 to work on EU issues, including the 2015 renegotiation and 2016 referendum. He subsequently worked on Brexit before covering Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. 

Before joining the Diplomatic Service, Mr Copsey was an academic, latterly Professor of Politics.

The Ambassador represents His Majesty The King and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the embassy and its consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
