Robert Syms

Biography

Robert Syms was a Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury) from 17 July 2016 to 15 June 2017. He was elected as the Conservative MP for Poole in Dorset in 1997.

Education

Robert was educated at Colston’s School in Bristol.

Career outside politics

He was leader of North Wiltshire District Council from 1984 to 1987 and a Wiltshire County Councillor from 1985 to 1997. He was also the managing director of his family’s plant hire firm in Chippenham.

Political career

In December 1999, Robert was appointed as Frontbench Spokesman for environment, transport and the regions. In September 2001, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party. In March 2003, he was also appointed as an Opposition Whip. From November 2003 to July 2007, he served as a Shadow Minister for Local Government.

Robert served as Assistant Whip (HM Treasury) from September 2012 until October 2013.
