Professor Sallie Bailey
Biography
Sallie has over 30 years’ experience of working in the areas of environment, natural resources and agriculture, both in the UK and internationally. Sallie’s focus is on ensuring science, evidence and analysis are at the heart of Natural England.
Sallie joined Natural England’s senior leadership team in 2024, with former roles such as Deputy Chief Science Advisor for Scottish Government and various leadership roles in the UK state forestry sector. She is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters and a Trustee of the Vincent Wildlife Trust and active member of the British Ecological Society (BES), serving as a BES Ambassador and Policy Committee member. She has an Honorary Professorship at the University of Stirling, affiliated to the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Sallie completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham (spatial and woodland ecology and biodiversity), and her post-doctorate at the Center for Conservation Biology, Stanford University, considering biodiversity, forest and agro-forestry ecosystems in Costa Rica, and arid ecosystems of Nevada and the Rocky Mountains, Colorado.

CSD has a budget of £55 million and 500 staff. These staff provide a capability to generate, manage and share scientific, technical and analytical information on nature, landscape and access. They have a wide range of scientific, analytical and technical expertise, and include:
- marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecologists
- geologists
- economists
- social scientists
- data analysts
- statisticians
