Sophie Stewart

Biography

Sophie Stewart joined the team as Deputy Head of Mission to Iceland in April 2024. Prior to arriving in Reykjavik, she was posted to the UK Mission to the UN in New York.

Sophie has previously been posted to the British Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia where she focussed on defence and security policy. She has also served in a range of diplomatic and corporate roles in London including in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Department and the Estates Department.

Prior to joining the service, Sophie studied Ancient and Modern History at Trinity College, Oxford and gained a Master’s Degree in War Studies from King’s College London.

Deputy Head of Mission, Iceland

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
