Stephen Marston
Biography
Stephen Marston spent most of his professional career working in the education service, particularly higher and further education. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire from 2011 to 2023. He was elected to the Board of UniversitiesUK (UUK) and served as Chair of AdvanceHE. Prior to that, he held a variety of roles in the Civil Service in Whitehall, including Director of Skills from 2002 to 2005, and Director General for, variously, Universities, Lifelong Learning, Further Education and Skills in three Government Departments from 2005 to 2011. He was Director for Institutions at the former Higher Education Funding Council for England from 1998 to 2002
He currently sits as a Non-Executive member of the Boards of the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research in Wales, the University of Derby, the Care Quality Commission, and the West London NHS Trust and Board in Common.
