Steven Mulvain

Biography

Steven arrived in Quito as Deputy Head of Mission in May 2024. An experienced diplomat, he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2009 and has served in diverse roles in London and overseas.

Prior to his current posting, Steven was Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Nouakchott from July 2020 to July 2023, where he contributed to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing UK interests in Mauritania. His prior experience includes a posting to Dushanbe, Tajikistan from 2011 to 2014, as well as short-term duties in Kosovo, Bolivia, and Greece. In London, Steven has worked on G7/G20 summits and coordination, consular assistance, and crisis management.

Steven holds an MA in English Literature from Balliol College, University of Oxford. He speaks Spanish and French. In his spare time, Steven enjoys cooking, video gaming, and travelling. He is thrilled to be in Latin America, and is looking forward to exploring Ecuador and the wider region.

Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy Quito

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
